Voice

Point of view involves the speaker’s: physical, social, political, and mental circumstances. All of these factors affect the narrative of events.

Not only must the work’s grammatical voice be determined, but the writer must determine whether or not their narrator will be reliable.

Active Voice- voice used to indicate that the subject of the verb is performing the action or causing the action. Example: The boy threw the ball.

Passive Voice- voice used to indicate that the subject of the verb is the recipient not the source of the action. Example: The ball was thrown by the boy

In each scene that is written, there are many different points of views and as a result, many different ways for a writer to deliver a scene. It is up to the writer to determine which point of views at which times are the best to delivering the message of each scene, keeping in mind that each point of view has a different effect on the reader.

Even with each scene, a writer must choose between delivering the scene in first, second or third point of view. The writer must decide whether the reader will experience the scene as a story (first person), as the narrator (second person), or as an observer (third person).
